The Club
The CMC was formed on 10 April 1925 with a membership base of around 27 adventurers. Originally established as a tramping club, the group’s usual activities included outings on the Port Hills around Christchurch and further afield to the foothills of Canterbury.
CMC has built huts in the Arthur’s Pass, Rakaia, and Aoraki/Mount Cook regions, which remain popular with both members and the general public. The club is also the proud owner of two mountain lodges located in Arthur's Pass and Mount Cook Villages.
Today, the CMC is a very active club for climbers who enjoy alpine, ice and mixed, sport and trad rock climbing, as well as other mountain adventure activities. The club is proud of its regular formal and informal trips, ever-popular instruction courses, weekly rock climbing nights, and often oversubscribed monthly club nights that bring together young and old for mountain-themed talks and informal trip planning sessions.
The CMC celebrates its 100th anniversary this year and welcomes all who enjoy spending time in the mountains.
